Background of the Study
Adventure tourism, a subset of the broader tourism industry, has gained significant traction in recent years as a means of promoting economic development, particularly in regions with natural landscapes and resources suited to outdoor activities. In Nigeria, many states, including Gombe, possess a wealth of natural attractions such as mountains, valleys, and wildlife, making them prime destinations for adventure tourism. Gombe State, located in the northeastern region of Nigeria, is blessed with an array of natural features, including the Gombe National Park, rugged terrains, and scenic landscapes that are ideal for adventure tourism activities like hiking, bird watching, and eco-tourism.
The potential for adventure tourism to drive economic growth in Gombe is substantial, considering that tourism can be a major contributor to job creation, infrastructure development, and local business growth. The state's government has recognized the potential of adventure tourism to diversify its economy, which has traditionally been reliant on agriculture. Gombe's tourism sector has the potential to create employment opportunities in both the formal and informal sectors, including in hospitality, transportation, retail, and guide services. However, despite these opportunities, adventure tourism in Gombe remains underdeveloped compared to other states in Nigeria, largely due to factors such as inadequate infrastructure, poor marketing strategies, and a lack of effective tourism management.
This study aims to explore the role of adventure tourism in promoting economic growth in Gombe State, focusing on how the sector can contribute to local economic development, improve livelihoods, and boost the state's economy.
Statement of the Problem
Although adventure tourism presents a significant opportunity for economic growth in Gombe State, the sector remains underdeveloped and underutilized. The lack of proper infrastructure, insufficient investment, and limited awareness of Gombe's potential as an adventure tourism destination have hindered the growth of this industry. As a result, the state has not fully capitalized on the economic opportunities that adventure tourism could offer. This study aims to examine the role of adventure tourism in promoting economic growth in Gombe State and to identify the key barriers preventing its full development.
